GUEST BLOG: Enhance connectivity to counteract travel risks

The UN tells us there are now more people in the world with mobile phones than ever before. According to GSMA Intelligence, there are also more mobile devices than people. And the 7.2 billion devices already used around the globe are multiplying a lot faster than we are.

The fact is, we’re hooked on our mobile connectivity. We’re using mobile devices for everything from tracking our partners to forecasting the weather, and even measuring our heart health.

Business travellers are depending on mobiles too
When business travellers set off abroad they turn to their mobile devices to find their way, research accommodation, catch up on news, make travel plans, pin down colleagues and more.

But when something serious happens overseas, it’s not always easy to find exactly the right advice and help quickly, from a single online source. Especially in the last year, when travellers have had to contend with everything from the British Airways flights fiasco and cyber security threats, to wildfires, hurricanes and terrorist attacks.

The (not so good) old days
Dramatic as recent global events have been, they’re not unprecedented. Think back to Turkey in July 2016, when the military surrounded Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport and flights were grounded. Or to Paris in November 2015, when there were several terrorist attacks across the city. Or to Greece in July 2015, when wildfires raged outside Athens. Many business travellers in situ had limited real-time and comprehensive information about what was going on, or how to react.

The value of hand-held solution
What if corporate travel risk mitigation came hand-in-hand with mobile access to a complete online risk management programme, as a matter of course? What if this global programme anticipated both medical and security risks, and provided services to mitigate these risks, such as pre-travel advice and training, tailored to specific destinations and needs?

What if it offered an accurate gauge of what life was really like on the ground abroad, with real-time intelligence and situational awareness?  What if it provided location-based monitoring and asset tracking; enabling HR departments to see all their global staff and assets in the context of relevant threats, and letting relatives at home see how close loved ones were to danger?

If an emergency struck, what if travellers could counteract the risk by using their mobile apps to raise an alert or call for medical or security assistance and advice from multilingual response teams - at the swipe of a screen?  And all this from the same mobile source, on a single mobile platform.

Meeting expectations
Business travellers today are venturing further afield than ever, to countries with limited medical care and volatile security situations. Even in traditionally safe destinations, threats to their health and safety are unpredictable.

It’s no surprise that their expectations of travel risk management have changed. Increasingly, they want to know about the real-time risks that they’re up against abroad and harness the right technology to counteract them - from a single source in the palm of their hands.

Advanced mobile intelligence tools can’t always prevent a crisis overseas. But they can limit the impact of an emergency - and that’s a compelling reason to make them part of any travel risk management plan.

As registrations open for Business Travel Show, the show’s organisers are calling on business travel start-ups to apply for a free stand in its Launchpad. Launchpad will showcase up to 15 of the most innovative and exciting start-ups to the show’s 7,500+ attendees.

Launchpad premiered in 2016 with eight exhibitors receiving a free stand, extensive marketing support, exposure to the show’s attendees and an entry into the inaugural Business Travel Disrupt Award, the winner of which receives a full-sized stand worth £8,000 at the following year’s event. Last year, the Business Travel Show increased its investment in innovation by doubling the size of its Launchpad. This means that up to 15 business travel start-ups can now exhibit for free each year.

Last year’s Business Travel Disrupt Award was won by Fairfly, an innovative solution for automatically tracking company flights for savings opportunities, including after ticket purchase. Fairfly has enabled corporates to save money and time when booking business travel.

Following its win, Fairfly is already confirmed to return to the Business Travel Show in 2018 to exhibit, alongside more than 270 leading travel suppliers.

"Being able to showcase our solution to the audience at the Business Travel Show was an amazing experience for us which gave us exposure to a high-calibre audience," said Gili Lichtman, Co-Founder and VP Sales at Fairfly. "Winning the Disrupt Award on top of this was fantastic as it increased our exposure even further. I would encourage all business travel start-ups to apply for this one of a kind opportunity."

David Chapple, Event Director, Business Travel Show, added: “Since its launch in 2016, Launchpad has become one of the most exciting elements of the Business Travel Show. It’s an amazing opportunity for start-ups to gain exposure among the travel industry’s top names. Buyers attending the show value the opportunity to be the first to hear about game-changing new technologies.”

To apply for a free stand in the Business Travel Show Launchpad, businesses must be three years old or younger. GUEST BLOG: LONDON AMONG TOP THREE PLACES IN THE WORLD TO STAY

Global hotel solutions provider HRS has compared average hotel room rates worldwide over the last four years (2011 – 2015) and revealed that despite economic uncertainties during this period, the outlook for the UK hotel industry is largely positive with an overall increase in room rates by 26 per cent.

In fact, London is one of the top three most expensive cities for an overnight stay in the world, costing £141 on average per night, according to the latest figures from 2015. Data revealed rates in the city had increased by 31 per cent during the four years, benefitting from the legacy of hosting major events such as the Royal Wedding and 2012 Olympic Games, making it an even more desirable destination for both business and leisure travellers.

In the UK, London, Leeds and Manchester recorded the biggest increases in average room rates per night between 2011 and 2015. During this period, Leeds almost doubled its cost per overnight stay with a 41 per cent rise and 30 per cent for Manchester.

Jon West, Managing Director of HRS UK & Ireland, commented:  “London has clearly continued to hold its own as a major international destination for travellers. UK hoteliers should find it reassuring that other cities are also benefitting from the uplift in demand.”

“Globally the hotel market has fluctuated massively over the past four years especially with recent global events and ongoing economic uncertainties.  In addition to this, technological advancements are giving business travellers more control over their bookings than ever before so we really would urge travel and procurement managers to review the effectiveness of their travel programmes on a regular basis to ensure they’re getting the best rates possible to make substantial savings for the long-term.”
